Two of the three players who reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open on Sunday marked a milestone for themselves. Tamara Zidansek was the first player to reach the last eight of this year’s edition of the event.

The Slovenian defeated the in-form Romanian, Sorana Cirstea in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-1 in an hour and 26 minutes. The start of the opening set featured an exchange of breaks before both players shook themselves off their early jitters to retain momentum on their serve.

In the tie-break, there was once again an exchange of mini-breaks between the two before Zidansek raced ahead to take the tie-break 7-4 and win the set. The second set was quite one-sided. Cirstea put herself on the scoreboard in the sixth game and even had a break point in the seventh game as the world no.85 served for the match. However, Zidansek fended it off and got the win on her first match point.

This is the first time Zidansek has reached this far at a Major. More importantly, in doing so, she also became the first Slovenian to achieve the feat.

In the quarters, she will play Paula Badosa. The 33rd-seeded Spaniard upset the 20th-seeded Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of a Slam for the maiden time in her career. Badosa had four more winners than the 2019 French Open finalist – 30 to 26 and nine fewer unforced errors than her – 30 to 39.

The Serbia Ladies Open winner has now won 17 matches on clay this year with only two losses, in Charleston and at the Mutua Madrid Open. Among these newcomers, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova turned back time to reach her first French Open quarter-final in a decade.
