The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) did not select Bashundhara as the host for fear of some complications in the coroner’s visit to Bangladesh.
Bashundhara Kings could not host the AFC Cup. The Group D match will be played in the Maldives. The AFC confirmed the matter in a statement on Monday.
Although Bashundhara Kings applied to be the host, it was not accepted by the highest football body in Asia. The Group D match will start on August 15 in Male, Maldives.
The Bashundhara Kings will face India’s Mohun Bagan, Maldives’ Majia Sports and a team from the play-offs. The play-offs will be played by Bangalore FC of India and Eagles Club of Maldives.
Earlier, the AFC Cup match was scheduled to start on May 14 in Male, Maldives, but at the last minute, the Asian Football Confederation announced the suspension.
Then on 16 May, the AFC released another schedule (June 26 to July 6) but the Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh objected to the new schedule. The reason is that the Bangladesh Premier Football League will continue at that time.
Bashundhara Kings wants to take part in the AFC Cup after finishing the Premier League. That is why the Bangladesh champions applied to postpone the AFC Cup. The AFC was forced to change the schedule once again at the request of Bashundhara Kings. According to the new schedule, the matches of Group D will be held on August 15-24.
August 15 – Play-off – Bangalore vs Club Eagles
August 18- Mohon Bagan vs. Play-Off
Bashundhara Kings vs Majia Sports on 21st August and then Play-off team vs Bashundhara Kings. Majia Sports vs Mohon Bagan will be held on 24th August
